“We Serve” Feature: Volunteerism and the American Red Cross Disaster Services

As part of Floyd Lee Locums volunteerism program, “We Serve,” we encourage employees to partner with people and programs that better the communities we live in. Our Learning Resource Coordinator, Leigh Patton-Collett, has been committed to this mission for years through the American Red Cross.

The American Red Cross ensures community services are available to those in need locally by providing shelters, food services, counseling, and the donation of blood for victims of disasters across the nation. In addition, the Red Cross offers training in lifesaving skills, such as First Aid, Babysitting/Childcare Safety, Basic Life Support, CPR/AED, Water Safety, and Lifeguard Certifications.

In Leigh’s own life, giving back with this organization has actually been a bit of a family tradition. First, with her mother who volunteered with their Disaster Coordination Services, then her brother who worked with its Disaster Relief Services—all the way to Leigh’s own first job as a Red Cross Certified Lifeguard for four years. More recently, Leigh is acting within the North Florida Disaster Action Team and the National Volunteer Intake/Processing Team.

“I spend about 12+ hours a month with the Red Cross,” said Leigh. “The opportunity to be a part of a community of dedicated volunteers and leaders drew me to the Red Cross again. As one of the largest humanitarian organizations in the country, the Red Cross mobilizes the power of hundreds of thousands of volunteers to turn community compassion into action.”

Leigh’s impact is making a difference. So much so that she is a newly recruited member of their National Disaster Workforce Engagement team, where she’ll be training to remotely support those in her home state of Kentucky. This is especially needed given the recent flooding that’s occurred in the region. Leigh will also be able to interview and onboard volunteers for assignments to the Disaster Services team.

Understanding the reach of organizations like the American Red Cross (ARC) and volunteers like Leigh can’t be understated. Beyond just their community support programs, ARC is also a huge advocate for military personnel, veterans, and their families. For Leigh, that resonates since both her father and husband are veterans—and the ARC takes up the call to deploy with service members at home and abroad, while also providing an array of services when they return to civilian life.

“I am humbled and so very proud to be a part of such an amazing organization like the American Red Cross,” continued Leigh. “I’m equally grateful to be at a company like Floyd Lee Locums that inspires me to get involved for the community I love, in the name of the company I love.”

We applaud Leigh for her generosity of spirit and dedication to this organization and cause. Learn more about our We Serve program of corporate volunteerism and community engagement.
