As part of Floyd Lee Locums volunteerism program, “We Serve,” we encourage employees to partner with people and programs that better the communities we live in. We especially love when we can pursue this mission as a team, which is something we got to do recently with Lowcountry Orphan Relief (LOR).
The mission of Lowcountry Orphan Relief is to provide support services and aid to meet the needs of South Carolina children identified as at-risk or suffering from abandonment, abuse, and/or neglect. They share a belief that no child should be without the basic necessities in life, regardless of their life circumstances.
Floyd Lee Locums has been a committed advocate for LOR’s cause, and we’ve had members of our team volunteer in the past with their Distribution Center giving. This is where volunteers sort, store, pack, and distribute donations for children. LOR then provides each child a Care Kit filled with clothing, shoes, and toiletries, as well as school supplies, stuffed animals, and books.
During our recent employee volunteer event, our company was charged with packing the toiletry kits. In total, we were able to complete dozens so that the LOR program had them ready to go for distribution to those in need. Children across the Lowcountry then received these kits right before—and during—the critical holiday season, when so many in our communities go without basis necessities.
This work is so needed because so many are affected, and the stats are staggering. In 2020 alone, there were 18,000 cases of child abuse, abandonment, and neglect reported to Lowcountry Orphan Relief. Of those, LOR was able to impact 5,500+ in the last year with support. Just by the numbers, you can see why more support is needed.
That’s one of the reasons a LOR team member joined Floyd Lee Locum’s annual gala to speak more about the organization and its work. We are committed to continuing our volunteerism and advocacy with this nonprofit to reach more children and impact more lives.
