“We Serve” Feature: Giving Back to the City We Call Home
As part of Floyd Lee Locums volunteerism program, “We Serve,” we encourage employees to partner with people and programs that better the communities we live in. No community is closer to our company’s heart than the city we are headquartered in: Charleston, South Carolina.
Charleston, like cities across America, has been hit hard by the COVID-19 pandemic. Yet, there are still selfless heroes that step up—and step in—when others needs help. Floyd Lee Locums wanted to take this past holiday season to celebrate and support them; to “serve those who serve others.”
Two groups that are never in short supply of heroes are first responders and teachers. To recognize the extraordinary work our police officers and firefighters do, we visited Coming Street Fire Station (home of Ladder 104 and Engine 106) and the City of Charleston Police Department to deliver masks, lunches and sweet treats. Despite the challenges and issues we face as a country, these first responders still show up every day to serve those in need.
Similarly, we visited Oakland Elementary, a local Title I school, to bring teachers fun masks to wear, meals and treats. Like so many with children, we know the immense contributions these classroom heroes make to our children’s lives and how hard teachers are working to keep educating our kids—whether that’s in person or online.
While “We Serve” is meant as a way for us to share the promise and passion we have for giving back, we are still humbled by the ways our community has taken our company into their hearts. After we visited the Charleston Police Department last winter, Chief of Police Luther T. Reynolds wrote us a note saying:
“The year of 2020 was a challenging time for us, but it was only possible for us to succeed because of support and partnerships from people like yourselves. Your efforts made a big difference and positive impact on our officers… it was timely, tangible and helpful.”
Police Chief Reynolds knows what it’s like to serve others. At our core, Floyd Lee Locums’ endeavors to give back in that way, in the way of all first responders, and with the heart that teachers bring to school every day. Paying it forward is our first step in doing so… but not our last.
