As part of Floyd Lee Locums volunteerism program, “We Serve,” we encourage employees to partner with people and programs that better the communities we live in. It’s even better, though, when our team members bring their families along to join in on charitable giving. That was the case recently when our IT and Help Desk Manager, Jason Greene, volunteered with Help 4 Kids Florence.
Help 4 Kids Florence is a nonprofit organization that feeds elementary school age children in need in Florence, South Carolina. In Florence County, there are a high number of elementary school children that depend on school meals throughout the week as their primary source of nourishment. Unfortunately, this means that many of them go hungry on the weekend when food is not available. Help 4 Kids Florence helps bridge that food insecurity by offering take home lunches on Fridays that can feed them through the weekend.
That’s why, with his daughter in tow, Jason went to support the organization in its worthwhile and needed mission by helping stamp, pack, and deliver lunch bags.
“I packed the bags with breakfast items, closed them up, and did a lot of heavy lifting,” said Jason. “Then, we moved on to opening vegetable and pudding pack boxes in preparation for loading up lunches. My daughter Skylar helped where she could—and on each bag, she stamped a message saying ‘You are loved.’”
Each weekend, more than 2,000 bags of food are packed and delivered for students, so they don’t go hungry on Saturday or Sunday. Thanks to the generosity of people like Jason and Skylar, over 2,500 students can be supported during a given school year.
“My daughter Skylar and I had such a great time volunteering with Help 4 Kids Florence,” said Jason. “We’re ready to go again next week—and I’ll be telling all my friends about it because it is amazing!”
Jason noted he’d also already signed up to drop bags off through Spring Break. Since it’s a long week, he said the bags are much larger with a lot more food—so the task at-hand would mean filling his truck up and delivering meals so kids had plenty to eat.
