“We Serve” Feature: A Big Heart Helping Big Brothers Big Sisters
As part of Floyd Lee Locums volunteerism program, “We Serve,” we encourage employees to partner with people and programs that better the communities we live in. Our Sales Support team member, Rae Hernandez, works on the Provider Services side of our business and recently shared her wonderful story volunteering with Big Brothers Big Sisters.
Since 1904, Big Brothers Big Sisters has operated under the belief that inherent in every child is incredible potential. As the nation’s largest donor- and volunteer-supported mentoring network, Big Brothers Big Sisters makes meaningful, monitored matches between adult volunteers (“Bigs”) and children (“Littles”), ages 5 through young adulthood in communities across the country. They develop positive relationships that have a direct and lasting effect on the lives of young people.
In Rae’s case, she shared that Big Brothers Big Sisters spoke to her interests because she believes every child should have the opportunity for a better future and at least one special person in their life lifting them up. Her journey with the organization has lasted years—and shows how one person’s impact can change and grow over time.
To start, Rae joined the organization for two years in college to spend time with her designated “Little Sister.” From hikes to basketball, disc golf to working on school projects, Rae was there to mentor, guide, and just have fun with her little sister. Over time, Rae’s commitment hasn’t changed, but the way she participates did.
“I stayed in touch with my little sister for over a decade,” said Rae. “But today, I have a family of five, plus grandma, under one roof. So, nowadays, I contribute in different ways. It’s become routine for everyone in my family to go through their clothes, toys, blankets, etc. every few months—then I drop it all off quarterly at Big Brother Big Sisters for those in need.”
Rae encourages everyone able to give their time or resources to worthy causes to do so. Many organizations have outlined policies allowing employees to take time off, sometimes even paid time, to support a cause close to the individual’s heart. It’s just a matter of knowing about it and finding a charity that motivates you to help.
“The We Serve program at Floyd Lee Locums is a huge blessing to me,” said Rae. “I’ve always been highly involved in philanthropy from a very young age and have continued my philanthropic efforts into adulthood. But, even if you’re new to volunteerism, it only takes visiting a website or placing a call to start supporting an organization.”
