“We Serve” Feature: Be A Mentor

As part of Floyd Lee Locums volunteerism program, “We Serve,” we encourage employees to partner with people and programs that better the communities we live in. This last fall, our CEO Natasha Lee got the opportunity to team up with Be A Mentor, a cause that enables youth to develop positive relationships with caring adults who empower them to reach their full potential through mentorship.

Natasha was paired with a seventh-grade girl being raised by her 75-year-old grandmother. The girl was one of five siblings who lost their mother to breast cancer—and the grandmother was finding it difficult to make time and connect with a teenager. That is when she decided to reach out to Be A Mentor for support.

Natasha was tapped to meet weekly via Zoom with the girl (due to the pandemic)—and began working with her on confidence, finding and owning her voice, and developing life skills. Natasha grounded everything they did in a prayer journal and goal setting, which are basic cornerstones of Natasha’s own life.

“Getting to know my mentee has been a blessing,” said Natasha. “She has such a shy smile and always has her hair in pig tails. She sent me a thoughtful gift in the mail with this beautiful hand-written card. That is when I realized that being a mentor was more of a gift to me, than just the time I shared with this sweet young lady. I am thankful God put me in a position to be a part of her life story.”

What’s next? Natasha hopes to follow this child through high school and beyond, as she grows into an amazing young woman. She cannot wait to see what is next! #WESERVE
