In the Spirit of Service: My “We Serve” Story
Every day, so many of us are lucky to be able to take for granted our good health. Sure, life comes with its stresses and frustrations, but the worst we have to face is a bad mood, some gray hairs or a little bit of weight we just can’t seem to lose. We’re blessed.
That good fortune, though, is a calling too. Maya Angelou said, “You can’t go through life with a catcher’s mitt on both hands; you need to be able to throw something back.”
Our health allows us to help those who aren’t as healthy. That’s why Floyd Lee Locums started “We Serve,” our corporate giving and volunteerism program—so we can ‘throw something back.’
I have been lucky enough to do this with Hospice of Charleston, a hospice care center dedicated to maintaining loved one’s quality of life for as long as possible. Volunteering there is a chance for me to give back; but, honestly, the healthcare professionals, caregivers and families give me more.
They show me what dignity during the hard stretches of life is. They teach me that care is delivered in a million moments rather than one medicine or therapy. And they require me to see each new day with gratefulness—that I can walk, breath and live without hindrance.
“We Serve” is, and will continue to be, a pillar of our organization because our first calling is to “serve those who serve others.” That doesn’t always have to come in the form of business strategies, bottom lines or marketing tactics. It can come in the form of opening your hands and heart to the communities around you and not expecting anything in return.
