PRIDE 2020: A Look to the Next 50 Years
Since our company’s inception, June has been a chance for us to speak clearly about our stance on LGBTQ+ rights. I’ve gotten to tell my own experiences with the community—and celebrated alongside as an ally in 2019 during the 50th anniversary of Stonewall. But this June, and what follows, is different.
After all, COVID-19 has canceled pride parades across our country. The festivals and fun have taken a backseat to the pandemic we are all living through. But that does not mean we do not have a reason to rally and cheer the progress still being made.
50 years have passed since the Stonewall Riots. As imperfect as those years were, we slowly made our way to somewhere better. And inclusivity trailed us the whole way. It brought more people along—and asked allies to be better each moment, day, and year.
That was the case last week when the Supreme Court ruled that someone could not lose their job based on their sexual orientation or gender identity. A law far behind the times was finally established to protect LGBTQ+ community members from unfair treatment in employment.
But while laws may fix what is written in documents, we also need to change hearts. After all, according to the government, there were still 1,400+ hate crimes against LGBTQ+ members in 2018. And that is just the ones that were reported. We also know that people of color, women, and transgender community members are disproportionately targeted for violence—and when they speak up, they are less likely to be believed.
51 years ago, the first pride march was a riot. Today, it is a celebration. But if you look closer at pride, it is people taking up space, raising their voices, and ensuring no one is confused about one fact: The LGBTQ+ community and its allies will not go backwards.
