The Long View of Locum Tenens Week

How Healthcare Facilities Celebrate Something New

It isn’t every year a pandemic strikes. Not since H1N1 have medical facilities across the country braced themselves for a potential deluge of patients. Unlike H1N1, though, the impacts of COVID-19 spread more rapidly than expected—and so much more was asked of our healthcare providers.

That’s where locums providers came in.

One-by-one, facility-by-facility, they stepped up. They showed up when it arrived, when it peaked, and even continue to show up as second and third “waves” of the diseases are taking root. Even as areas of the country have reopened, closed, and reopened again, locums providers have come forward to help facilities in need.

That—among so many other reasons—is why we celebrate them on National Locum Tenens Week. For the facilities they have alleviated staffing pressure for during this time, and the healthcare staff they have provided respite and relief for, as the demands of the pandemic raged.

As background, National Locum Tenens Week occurs annually the second week in August. Led by the National Association of Locum Tenens Organizations® (NALTO®), the program’s annual platform provides a forum to collectively recognize locum tenens doctors and the contributions made by staffing agencies to the U.S. healthcare industry.

When we asked Floyd Lee Locums CEO, Natasha Lee, to describe the impact of locums on facilities, she noted, “Nothing short of incredible. During this time, locums providers have become a part not of a role or a contract—but of hope. They gave communities, facilities, and permanent staff an opportunity to breathe easier knowing they were there to help.”

In this year, and in the months to come, it’s critical to recognize these contributions. It’s important to continue raising up those who do great things when asked. And to continue looking toward the future of locums with potential and pride.
