The Interstate Medical Licensure Compact (IMLC): Growing and Strong!
In 2017, we shared an interview with our CEO, Natasha Lee, on the Interstate Medical Licensure Compact (IMLC). Described as a gamechanger at the time, Natasha spoke to the benefits and challenges of the Compact, including the application, understanding the licensing boards, and negotiating the fees.
In just a few short years, the program continues to experience a boon. What was 22 participating states has now grown to 29 states (including the District of Columbia and Guam). And licensure is designated from 43 different Medical and Osteopathic Boards.
IMLC certification is built around how physicians practice medicine today. Our lives are becoming more mobile every year, and the same is true for doctors and the ways they deliver care. Practices are no longer limited to one location, and the rapid rise of telemedicine is breaking down physical barriers to consultation and treatment like never before.
With IMLC, physicians enjoy faster turnaround times for licenses. And physicians can apply for as many participating state licenses as they want at the same time. The expedited approval process is the same for all 29 states, avoiding the need to repeatedly apply and wait through a long, drawn out process for each license one-by-one.
While the value cannot be understated for the physician, the IMLC also has downstream impacts on patient care. No longer do facilities need to experience extended timeframes to hire because licenses aren’t in place. Providers are able to start working sooner and have an immediate impact on the communities they serve and the continuum of care.
Compact-licensed doctors are preferred candidates who can easily be placed in the most compelling and highest paying roles. State licensures are issued more quickly with the ability to add additional states in the future if needed. And about 80% of physicians will meet the IMLC eligibility requirements.
