“We Serve” Feature: Shining Light on Difficult Topics

As part of Floyd Lee Locums volunteerism program, “We Serve,” we encourage employees to partner with people and programs that better the communities we live in. Nowhere is this support needed more than in those spaces and relationships where healthy boundaries and conflict have been violated.

That’s where organizations like WEAVE (Woman Escaping A Violent Environment) can really make an impact. Which is why, recently, our Licensing & Credentialing Coordinator, Laura Fenner, donated to the cause alongside her son and daughter.

WEAVE’s mission is to promote safe and healthy relationships, and support survivors of sexual assault, domestic violence, and sex trafficking. Laura has been open about her personal experience with WEAVE and how it helped her family:

“As a survivor of domestic violence, my children and I found ourselves in a sad and very difficult situation. Unfortunately, my kids witnessed things no child should ever witness. They were never physically impacted, but they struggle with the mental and emotional trauma to this day.  The police were no strangers to our house, and on one occasion, they ended up giving my contact information to WEAVE.

“I never thought of myself as a victim of domestic violence, believing my situation wasn’t that bad and that others needed WEAVE’s services more than I did. When the team at WEAVE reached out to me after a particularly difficult night, they offered me a multitude of services, including counseling for me and my kids. They treated me with kindness, compassion and understanding when all I felt was shame and guilt. I will never be able to repay the kindness they extended to us, nor will I ever forget it.”

For so many, like Laura and her family, WEAVE’s support can help to rebuild a sense of security, comfort, and independence to move forward. As Laura found out volunteering, they take all donations—whether monetary or clothing—and put them to good use for those in safe houses.

One prime example of this is at WEAVE’s retail stores. Anyone can shop there and donate—but then the women utilizing WEAVE’s services are offered vouchers to shop for their necessities at no cost to them or their families. It acts as a circular “pay-in-forward” system, which Laura and her son did donation drop offs to—and Laura and her daughter volunteered an afternoon with

It’s easy to see why programs like this are so impactful—and why they’re so needed. There are countless families like Laura’s who benefit from programs like WEAVE. When you just look at the stats:

  • 1 in 3 women experience domestic violence
  • 15% of domestic violence victims are male
  • Teens 16-19 are the most likely to be sexually assaulted

For being a positive light in the world: We cannot thank Laura and her family enough for their volunteerism—but moreover for bravely sharing their own experience and removing the taboo and shame associated with difficult subjects and terms like “domestic violence.” We couldn’t be prouder to know them.
