The Healthcare Humanitarians: Supporting Afghan Relief Efforts Here at Home

By now, most of us have heard heroic, humbling and harrowing stories of Afghanistan. Stories of individuals and families thrust into a rapidly changing homeland—and some braving the hard decision to leave their home country, maybe forever. The news has shown us that those departing Afghanistan can face uncertainty, heartbreak and even danger.

That’s why, in the past several months, Floyd Lee Locums joined FEMA, the military, and Afghan relief organizations to ramp up on our side of the Atlantic. While the journey for evacuees is undoubtedly stressful, we were able to support the healthcare needs of several field hospitals set up along the East Coast to intake, assess and care for those arriving from Afghanistan.

To aid in these efforts, we continually staffed a variety of Primary Care Physicians, Medical Directors, Pharmacists, Nurse Practitioners, and Midwives. In fact, the large majority of clinicians engaged in these efforts were provided by Floyd Lee Locums’ physicians and advanced practice providers who stepped forward to lend their skills and support.

“Overnight, we went from needing 1-5 physicians for unrelated contracts to fully engaging staffing agencies [to fill roles rapidly],” said the Government Services representative. “To date, Floyd Lee Locums has filled 92% of our physician and 100% of our pharmacist positions.”

In order to achieve this, and because this was an urgent need, we were able to expedite the process for those who were available to help. Our credentialing team worked tirelessly to get clinicians through the emergency privileges process so they could be deployed to these field hospitals as soon as possible.
