Diversity, equity and inclusion (DEI) efforts are growing in communities and company cultures every day. In healthcare, they’re especially important as disparity continues to be a systemic problem in ensuring each person receives the care and treatment they need.
Positive change related to DEI is also occurring on the care delivery side. An example of this is Bryan Hudson, a Critical Care Physician Associate who lives with a mild vision impairment. Floyd Lee Locums works with facility partners to ensure minor adjustments on assignments that give Bryan the space to practice, and support his disability, so he can extend care to more patients.
Bryan first discovered Floyd Lee Locums when Chad Hales, director of physician and advance practice acquisition reached out to him about a role we were searching for in Ohio. The company’s mantra of taking care of those healthcare professionals who care for others resonated with him. In his locums past, Bryan felt like he was nothing more than a conduit between the agencies, hospital systems and patient care.
Early in the conversations, and before he worked his first assignment, Bryan lost his mother-in-law. He and his wife Trisch remember knowing that Floyd Lee Locums was a different kind of agency when a personal card and flower arrangement showed up on their doorstep sharing condolences for their loss.
That care and comfort only expanded as Bryan and Chad’s friendship and working relationship grew, and Bryan signed his first contract. As Chad learned more about Bryan and his disability, Floyd Lee Locums was able to collaborate with healthcare facilities to make simple adjustments that allowed Bryan to work more effectively. One example was getting him a dedicated workstation in facilities that allowed for magnifications to the EMR Charting software—a simple change that got care to more patients and made things easier on Bryan.
As Bryan puts it, “People want to be known for what they can do, not defied by a disability or the things they can’t.” At Floyd Lee Locums, Bryan found a partner who saw the impact he could make if minor accommodations could be made.
Three years into his working relationship with the Floyd Lee Locums, Bryan has developed a strong personal friendship and camaraderie with Chad. From weekly touch bases, to advice, sharing ideas and just general check-ins, the two stay connected across the country. Their rapport is so strong that Bryan and Trisch vacationed in Utah to visit Chad and his family recently. Whether golfing and gambling, site seeing or more, Chad and Kylee showed the Hudson’s a great time. So much so, that they’re planning another vacation together this September.
